A cricket ball or a dense silicone ball on a flexible shaft with a wooden handle. Nice and simple.
These are heavy as you'd expect but you don't need to be heavy handed with them, overhand they produce a delicious sting and underhand (like a pendulum) they are more thuddy.
They have enough weight to carry the swing without putting a lot of force behind it.
